This 4- session class explores the opportunity to work specifically with 4x5 field cameras in areas around San Francisco to gain control and image quality that far surpasses smaller formats. The view camera’s design allows the front (lens) standard and the rear (film) standard to move independently of one another. This allows for the movements known as swing and tilt, which give enormous control of subject depth of field, and rise, fall, and shift, which allow for excellent control of subject geometry (particularly useful in the photography of architecture). View cameras are also known as a large format cameras, and as that implies, the resulting negative, anywhere from 4x5 inches to 8x10 inches, can render prints of extremely high resolution and smooth tonal gradations.

Students will start with an overview of 4x5 cameras including camera operation, perspective, focus control, and more. The following sessions include one onsite shooting at locations such as Golden Gate Park, Lands End, Palace of Fine Arts (specific locations TBD on first night of class based on students’ interest). This class will cover all aspects unique to the view camera as well as sheet film handling and development.

PRE-REQ: Shooting in the Manual mode with cameras. View camera experience is helpful but not necessary.

BRING: Notebook and view camera (if you have one). Cameras/tripods can be rented for additional fees
