Build Your Own Camera Lens


This 4-session class will teach students the fundamentals of DIY camera lens making for interchangeable lens cameras, point-and-shoot, and smartphone cameras. We will build lenses out of anything that refracts of diffracts light. The lenses will isolate and amplify optical distortions and create effects. Students will also learn how to dismantle lenses and other optical equipment to extract interesting components. Every homemade lens has its own quirks. A daily group critiques will help students find the situations where their lenses converge to create an interesting photographs. Students will end the class with a lens mount and at least three homemade camera lenses. 

PRE-REQ: None

BRING: Camera (any kind). If you are using a SLR, bring a body cap that then don't mind cutting a hole in or a lens mount adapter ring or extension ring.

INCLUDES: Lab pass to B&W group darkroom (print size maximum 11"x14") and roll film processing.
