DIGITAL NEGATIVE TO ALBUMEN

Ashley Valmere Fischer

In this 4-session course, students will learn how to create digital negatives to make Albumen prints. Albumen was one of the earliest methods of photographic printing. The emulsion consists of egg whites and silver nitrate, as well as other chemicals. It creates a long lasting duotone image with great detail and contrast due to the print being contained on the compact layer of albumen rather than deep within in the fibers of the paper. In this hands-on and lecture-based workshop, students are shown the fine details of this process from chemistry to paper coating techniques. Specific topics include processing solutions, paper types, and proper procedures for exposing, processing, and toning prints. An overview of scanning, digital negative creation, and reproduction is also covered. Each participant has the opportunity to make multiple prints with time to refine and experiment.

PRE-REQ: Traditional B&W printing experience, basic understanding of Photoshop.

BRING: Film negatives and/or RAW files at 300dpi and 8 x 10" in size, and a notebook. Students will also need to purchase Non Sensitized Bergger cot 320, Arches Platinotype, or Strathmore 500  paper at 8 x 10".

INCLUDES:  Tuition includes in class use of chemistry and some paper.  Additional supplies may need to be purchased to work outside of class. Students will also receive a lab pass to computer workstations, the Epson 3880, the Alternative Process Suite, and BW#3.
