EXPERIMENTAL DARKROOM PHOTOGRAPHY: MORDANCAGE
Mordançage is a process that alters a finished black and white silver gelatin print. In this one-day workshop, we will experiment with the techniques of “lifting emulsion” and veiling that were perfected by Jean-Pierre Sudre’s chemical ratios. Mordançage creates a unique melting effect, and each print is a one-of-a-kind piece. It inspires visual similarities to other mediums such as painting and relief sculpture, blurring the line between photography and printmaking. This class is limited to 6 students
BRING: 5-10 B&W RC / Fiber Silver Gelatin prints (Smaller than 16 x 20”)*
NOTES: Some papers do not react well to this process. Arista (or maybe Adox) are not suggested as these papers have mixed results. Ilford Fiber warm tone glossy and in general Ilford RC and fiber papers work fine. Mordançage only works on the shadow (or black) areas, so if a print is under-exposed it will not work. Glossy papers are recommended as they achieve best results
