Marshall Berman graduated from the University of Southern California with a dual major in cinema and fine art. He has been a professional photographer for over 40 years and taught a studio lighting course (part time) at City College of San Francisco for over 21 years. He has also produced and directed for the theatre and film. His current studio is home to a variety of applied arts including his museum-exhibited welded steel sculptures.

Marshall's Teaching Philosophy is:

Almost every time I take on a new assignment I begin by visualizing that assignment with a self imposed, "naive-like attitude" for fear of missing the spontaneous. That process (which I always share with my students, allows me to feel like I'm observing for the first time the freshest view of anything in front of me. It's kinda like picking a radish or an onion out of it's home in the soil and embracing that moment as  the earth falls away.

Have you done that lately ?…I always ask ?
