NIGHT PHOTOGRAPHY ON MARE ISLAND
This workshop is for photographers who would like to learn how to make proper exposures (either film and/or digital) after dark, both by the light of the moon, and by existing artificial light. This class begins at the Mare Island Museum where students get a brief introduction to the former shipyard and the lecture/presentation portion of the workshop. Students then will go out into the field and photograph the 100-150 year-old brick buildings, massive ship-building equipment and structures, historic officer’s mansions, cold war-era bomb shelters and military artifacts in park-like settings on Mare Island. Upon completing this workshop, participants should be comfortable photographing in a wide variety of low-light situations—from relatively short exposures illuminated by ambient or industrial light and streetlight—to longer exposures of ten minutes or more. Film and digital capture will be discussed and compared.
Please note, this class will take place rain or shine. We encourage you to dress appropriately for the weather.
PRE-REQ: Students should know how to use their specific cameras in the dark (with full manual control via remote shutter controller or cable release) and have a firm grasp of the basic concepts of photography.
BRING: 35mm, medium format film cameras, or digital SLRs with full manual controls and a bulb or time setting, sturdy tripod, digital watch or other timer. Instructor will email a suggested equipment list with more detail.
SUMMER DATES: Sat. 5-11p, August 19th
