PHOTOGRAPHING THE EVERYDAY
The tangled nest of power cables in a drawer, the faded magnets clinging to the refrigerator, the freckles on the back of your hand, the blur of a lover exiting the room, the receipts cluttering the dashboard, the fleeting sunlight raking across your desk. The camera is an amazing tool to help you see the familiar with new eyes. The snapshot is a powerful aesthetic for conveying the intimacy, irony, stress and humor of our daily lives -- at home, at work, and in-between. The goal of this class is to have your camera with you as much as possible, using your everyday experiences as source material to make compelling images. Through assignments and informal group critiques, students will experiment with new approaches to photographing as well as gain confidence building a personal, more cohesive body of work. We also will discuss work by inspiring artists each week, such as William Eggleston, Sally Mann, Elinor Carucci, Todd Hido, Catherine Opie, Larry Sultan and Nick Waplington.
BRING: 5-10 images of your favorite work.
TUITION INCLUDES: A lab pass to RayKo's computer workstations, the B&W and color group darkrooms, as well as B&W film processing. The lab pass does not include access to scanners or printer workstations.
