In this intermediate to advanced level digital photography course, students will learn the history of how photography has been used since its invention to reveal an inner or psychological world that follows an emotional logic. Lectures will cover this history with emphasis on early allegorical photographers, surrealists, 1970s and 80s feminist photographers, and contemporary analog and digital image-makers. Through out this course we will explore artists and the techniques they employ to convey emotional and psychological states. Some artists that will be highlighted in the class are Henry Peach Robinson, Dora Maar, Francesca Woodman, Emmet Gowin,Suk Kuhn Oh, Gregory Crewdson, and David Hilliard. Students will also be required to complete photographic assignments that include in-camera compositions, digital compositions, and self-portraits. Each three-hour class will consist of 1/2 lecture and 1/2 lab time/Photoshop instruction/critique.
