THE PORTRAIT

In this class, students will explore the role of portraiture. We will begin with an overview of the history of portrait photography and students are encouraged to bring in a few images of their own work for discussion. New artists and strategies for capturing someone’s “likeness” will be introduced each week, covering a range of topics such as mug shots, environmental portraiture, staged documents, time-lapse montages and the all important selfie. Students will be given assignments based on these topics and will participate in informal group critiques. A willingness to experiment and learn from others is  important for this class, and play will be emphasized over trying to achieve a signature body of work.
