Van Dyke Brown is a method of contact printing using ultraviolet light that was developed in the early turn of the century. Many of us are familiar with the Van Dyke Print and it's sister, the cyanotype, as a painterly style of photographic printing. In this 3 session workshop students will cover the fundamentals of the Van Dyke print and explore new methods of experimentation with this historical process.

Day one will consist of lecture where students will discuss what type of imagery works best for the process, how to navigate the notoriously short contrast scale, paper options, as well as the proper way to mix chemicals. On day two, students will make large format digital negatives on transparency film and coat their selected papers. Day 3 will consist of using RayKo's UV unit to make your Van Dyke print on your pre coated paper. Student will be divided into smaller groups and work with the instructor in a 2.5 hour time slot throughout the day to maximize production.

Tuition includes a Van Dyke Printing Kit, use of some in class materials, and a week pass to the computer workstations and scanners (excluding Imacon). Some additional materials may need to be purchased prior to class.

PRE-REQ: Basic Photoshop Knowledge is encouraged. Students will leave this class with an understanding of the process, chemicals to make additional Van Dykes, and at least one 11 x 14 Van Dyke Print.

BRING: Day 1: Brown chemical container, notebook. More info on additional supplies will be discussed on Day 1.
